Real Estate and Neighbourhood:

The Junction is one of those great neighbourhoods that has just come to life over the last decade. Originally this was a very well to do neighbourhood with a separate entity politically to Toronto. Much of the residential development occurred on the later part of the 1800’s. It drew a large blue collar demographic due to the large amounts of industrial hubs that set up in the area. Ultimately many residents in the neighbourhood got tired of the abusive nature of a lot of the workers in the area and a vote placed a prohibition on alcohol sales in the Junction. This prohibition was in place for almost a century and was lifted in 2000. The Junction as a neighbourhood just never seemed to approach a stage of regrowth or renewal as other similar neighbourhoods in Toronto were doing. It was then agreed that the prohibition was dissuading smaller restaurants and businesses moving into the are, so as it was lifted, smaller bars and restaurants started moving into the area. The economic department for the ward also worked closely with the community to help with the gentrification of the neighbourhood. The area became popular to the artistic communities due to cheaper rental rates in the area and before long younger couples were moving in and buying due to cheaper house prices just north of High Park and Bloor West Village.

Housing stock range from Victorian style in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s mixed in with many semi-detached and detached post war homes. Price tends to drop as you go north towards St. Clair.

Boundaries are Runnymede St. to the west, the Canadian National rail tracks to the east, St. Clair to the north and Annette St to the south, bordering High Park. This is a great neighbourhood for the 20 and 30 something’s with more affordable but still attractive properties with charm and a certain funkiness, also some condo developments have begun to develop in the neighbourhood, and the many old industrial spaces promise many interesting hard loft conversions in the future.

Parks and Recreation:

Being just north of High Park the Junction residents are very lucky to be near the largest of Toronto's downtown city parks; High Park, it's entrance being just to the eastwards on Bloor. St. W. There is no shortage of recreational activities to get you and the family involved in here. Everything ranging from lovely walks through the Chinese gardens, down by the waterfront of Grenadier Pond, to the Mini Zoo, to the The Jamie Bell Adventure park and the many sports facilities which the park has, for baseball, tennis, swimming pool, ice skating etc etc.  here's a link to the sports page for High Park: Link

Also just south of Keele and Dundas in the neighbouring West Bend area is an: Baird Park. It is proposed also that a off-leash park for pets is constructed.

 

 

 

Transportation:

The 41 Keele bus travels north and south along Keele Street, north to Steeles Ave and south to the Bloor – Danforth Subway line.

The 40 Junction bus runs along Dundas St. W. leaving or arriving at the Dundas St. W. station of the Bloor – Danforth Subway line.

The 26 Dupont bus runs east west across Annette St.

The 512 St Clair Streetcar runs along St. Clair Ave. W.

 

Shopping and Restaurants:

Along the Dundas St. West from Keele to Runnymede has seen the biggest surge of hype little restaurants and family shops since the lifting of the prohibition.

Just to the north on St. Clair Ave W. much of the old meat packing industry has ll but moved out and many box store developments have taken place, now you can find everything from Starbucks to Canadian Tire to Metro.
